Sustainable kitchens bristol...

Quality Durability Sustainability

We are currently living at a time where the importance of making eco-friendly choices is ever more important. Here at Margetts & Margetts we make sure that sustainability is at the forefront of our decision making when we are crafting your kitchen. From choosing locally sources produce, what type of timber we select and paint we use, all choices have sustainability at its heart without compromising the quality of the kitchen.

The majority of kitchens’ bought are unfortunately not sustainable and most people will make the mistake of choosing a kitchen that looks good initially but will quickly look warn. Most high street kitchen companies make their carcasses from MDF or chipboard. These will absorb moisture very easily, will lose their shape, will sage, swell and will quickly need replacing. PLEASE DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE.

Here at Margetts & Margetts we make sustainable kitchens. All our carcasses are made from layers of birch, glued together in alternate directions for maximum strength, stability as well as to eliminate swelling and sagging. This means that our kitchens will last and replacements will not be needed, reducing waste and negative impact on the planet.

Our doors and frames are made from Poplar wood which we choose to use due to its quick growing speed, resulting in a more sustainable production. Some kitchen companies choose oak which is slow-growing and very difficult to source in a sustainable way.

This makes every cabinet we make a sustainable kitchen cabinet.

All kitchens are painted with environmentally friendly, hard wearing Farrow and Ball paint. Normal paint not only toxifies the environment but also considerately contributes to the indoor air pollution in our homes. This has been linked to respiratory issues and headaches. Farrow and Ball do not use harmful chemicals and use a water base formula and natural pigments to create the calming sensual pigments.

Choose a sustainable kitchen company! Choose Margetts and Margetts where we are not only high in quality but also conscientious in our environmental choices.

Shaker kitchen bristol?

The Shaker Kitchen was first designed by the ‘United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing” in 1818. Their humble, and uncomplicated way of life, lent itself to the beautiful simplicity and honesty of the Shaker kitchen that we all love today. With the desire for function and proportion over extravagance, ornamentation such as carving, metal work and veneers were replaced with creative solutions such as asymmetry storage and multipurpose forms to create visual interest. The Shaker community believed that everything they made should have a purpose and be created as a testament to God. This meant that they only used the best material and refined processes to make the Shaker kitchen. Whilst some may think this is silly even the atheists among us appreciate the beauty this way of working created.

The Shaker community hand made all their furniture and by the mid 1800’s it was renowned amongst the finest in the world. One of the best known designs being the Shaker kitchen, known for being flat panelled with rail frames and has been the inspiration for many modern designs.

In todays society machinery dominates this craft, however the Shaker would have originally been made with hand tools and patience. One similarity in the construction to todays Shaker is the hand painted finish, though the paint is no longer made from natural plant dies, the majority of todays colours are natural, pastel and soft in nature.

Here at Margetts & Margetts we love making handmade kitchens and even more we love making handmade Shaker kitchens. The traditional history of the Shaker kitchen is embedded in our bespoke kitchen Shaker designs, however we love a bit of the modern. We can maintain a traditional feel whilst curving your doors, combine the original wood feel with some granite or paint you a blue Shaker kitchen if you like……JUST ASK……..we like to think we can do anything you desire……even if you want Shaker kitchen ideas from us!….
